I first moved to London in 2010, and while the city has evolved so much since then, it somehow still feels the same—if that even makes sense! For me, London is a city like no other. Every time I visit, I get hit with a wave of nostalgia, yet its buzzing energy always makes it feel fresh and exciting.

London is famous for its culture and deep-rooted history, as well as its pop culture connections (Harry Potter will always be a favourite part of my childhood). No matter your interests, there’s something here for everyone.

I especially love wandering its streets in the evening when the city glows, and the atmosphere feels almost magical. It doesn’t matter if you’re diving into world-class attractions or simply soaking in the local vibe; London is never boring, that’s for sure!

As one of the most global cities in the world, it’s home to people from every corner of the globe. This creates a unique melting pot of traditions, cuisine, and celebrations. On the Tube, you’ll hear dozens of languages, and on every street, you’ll find incredible international influences in everything from the food to the festivals.

There is so much to offer, and this is why you should visit London!

2. The Perfect Blend of Old and New

I guess this is London’s greatest secret and why it’s such an incredible city. Even after all these centuries, it’s still managed to retain its ancient heritage and combine it with modern innovation. 

London beautifully weaves its past into its present. 

Throughout the city, and if you keep your eyes open, it’s easy to stumble upon ancient ruins, like the Roman London Wall or medieval wonders like the Tower of London. The best thing is that you can spend the day visiting two thousand-year-old sites while standing near sleek skyscrapers in the City’s CBD! 

I also love strolling aimlessly through Westminster for those classic London vibes, but then head to Canary Wharf for ultra-modern architecture. The contrast is striking and is what makes London so visually spectacular. 

Expect to find old pubs tucked under glass towers and cobblestone streets leading to modern art galleries. It’s a city where history is celebrated, but innovation is constant, and this is another one of the main reasons why you should visit London.

Fun Fact >> Did you know London’s history dates back to its founding by the Romans in AD 43? I knew this, but I wasn’t entirely sure what happened between then and now. Cue me falling down a Wiki rabbit hole for the past hour—and now I’m practically a London historian!

So, what have I learned? Well, since Roman London, the city has evolved through Anglo-Saxon London (5th century–1066), Norman and Medieval London (1066–15th century), Tudor London (1485–1604), Stuart London (1603–1714), and finally into the last few centuries that shaped modern-day London as we know it.

London has faced a lot over its history, from deathly plagues, the Great Fire of 1666, civil wars, world wars, aerial bombings, riots, and terrorist attacks. Yet, it stands today as a testament to resilience and reinvention.

What’s incredible is how much of this history you can still explore today. For example, you’ll be able to take a guided tour of the Tower of London or uncover the hidden London Mithraeum, an ancient Roman temple preserved below the city streets. 

Its rich history is a great reason why you should visit London. 

4. A Cultural Melting Pot

London’s long history has created one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. Even back in Roman times, the city was home to people from across the Roman Empire, including locals from Britannia, North Africa, the Middle East, and continental Europe.

Today, more than 300 languages are spoken here, and over 270 nationalities are represented. This incredible mix brings so much variety—global cuisine, colourful festivals, and neighbourhoods with their own unique vibe. 

I remember the festival I went to at Battersea Power Station about a decade ago before the whole area was redeveloped. It was the Indian festival, Holi, we celebrated with music, dance, and throwing colourful powders into the air; it was so much fun!

I know I’ve said it a few times, but London really is perfect for everyone. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with family, the city has fantastic attractions and activities to suit every kind of trip.

You could enjoy a romantic Thames cruise or visit family-friendly spots like the Science Museum or ZSL London Zoo. You can dive into immersive theatre experiences, fun discovery tours, and even take day trips to the countryside if you fancy a change of scenery—perfect for getting a full dose of British charm.

London is brilliant if you’re after luxury, with its posh hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants, but it’s just as great for budget travellers. Free museums, beautiful parks, and stunning architecture mean you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy it, either.

6. The West End (& Performing Arts in General)

London’s theatre scene is second to none, especially in the dazzling West End. Experiencing these West End shows is another excellent reason why you should visit London.

The last show I watched was Tina Turner, and it was amazing; I really enjoyed it. I try to go at least once a year, but the smaller productions are also worth watching. However, as a tourist in London, catching a long-running classic like Les Misérables or The Lion King is a must.

Some of the theatres themselves are also part of the magic. The Theater Royal Drury Lane is the oldest theatre site in the world and is still in use!

Beyond the West End, venues like the National Theatre and the Bridge Theatre near London Bridge offer cutting-edge performances.

7. An Incredible Art Scene

If you’re into art, London is definitely worth a visit—it’s a dream! There are loads of galleries to explore, but my favourite has to be the National Gallery, standing proudly over Trafalgar Square. It’s free to enter (a big bonus!) and packed with masterpieces, from Van Gogh to my personal favourite, Monet’s Water Lilies.

If modern art is more your thing, the Tate Modern is a must. It couldn’t feel more different. Housed in a former power station, it’s got this cool industrial vibe that totally contrasts with the National Gallery’s classic interior.

London is also full of smaller galleries like the Saatchi Gallery or Whitechapel Gallery, which are perfect for discovering something new. You’ll find pop-up exhibitions at places like the V&A or Royal Academy of Art, which can be a highlight.

And if you’re a fan of street art, head to Shoreditch or Camden for some fantastic murals. However, my favourite spot is The Leake Street Arches, where an entire tunnel is a graffiti-covered masterpiece.

8. Countless Museums

Galleries aside, London is absolutely packed with museums. Few cities can rival it, especially since the museums are the best places to visit in London for free! It’s another excellent reason why you should visit London!

One of my favourites is the Natural History Museum. You’ll find a towering blue whale skeleton at the entrance; there’s also a whole room dedicated to beautiful gems. However, it’s not just about what’s inside; it’s also housed in one of the most stunning buildings in the city, and it is perfect for all ages. Plus, throughout the year, fantastic exhibitions are on display and during the festive season, there’s even an ice rink out front.

The British Museum is another must-see; it’s got a vast collection of artefacts from around the world. London’s smaller museums are also worth a visit, like the Wellcome Collection or Sir John Soane’s Museum.

If you’re travelling with kids, the Science Museum is always a hit, while art lovers can lose yourselves in the Wallace Collection—a hidden gem that’s packed with charm.

9. London’s Neighbourhoods are Unique

One of my favourite things to do in London is to just walk around. The city is pretty incredible and filled with little gems and pockets of secret spots. London’s boroughs each have a personality that makes exploring by foot super fun.

Westminster is the heart of the city’s history and politics and where many of London’s iconic sites can be found. The City of London is the financial powerhouse with sleek skyscrapers, rooftop bars and panoramic city views. East London is a trendy spot, with Shoreditch’s street art and Hackney’s hipster cafes. In Southwark, you’ll find riverside gems like Borough Market and Shakespeare’s Globe. 

For upscale vibes, head to Chelsea or Kensington, while Camden and Soho are perfect for nightlife. Every neighbourhood has its own surprises, and wandering off the beaten path is half the fun; Little Venice is one of my favourite spots!

If you’ve ever researched the best places to visit, London always pops up as a favourite—and for good reason! The city is packed with world-famous landmarks, and just walking around, you’ll find it impossible to miss them.

These landmarks are iconic for a reason! They showcase London’s history, architectural brilliance, and cultural significance. Many are instantly recognisable from postcards, movies, and TV, and they’re one of the top reasons why you should visit London.

For me, it’s hard to beat the majestic Big Ben paired with the Gothic beauty of the Palace of Westminster, aka the Houses of Parliament, and Westminster Abbey. Tower Bridge is simply breathtaking, and if it’s stunning views you’re after, the London Eye is unbeatable. Buckingham Palace is another famous landmark—try to time your visit with the Changing of the Guard. And don’t forget St. Paul’s Cathedral with its awe-inspiring dome or Trafalgar Square, complete with its iconic lions!

11. Astonishing Architecture

I’ve touched on the brilliance of London’s architecture, but it deserves a whole section dedicated to, well…its brilliance. London’s architecture tells a story that spans centuries. If there’s only one reason why you should visit London, this is it.

Wandering through the city, I’m always amazed at how much variation there is and how the old and new blend together seamlessly. You’ll be able to see medieval treasures alongside grand Georgian terraces.

Further north, the red-brick St Pancras Station and St Pancras Renaissance Hotel is a Victorian wonder that brings a touch of Gothic drama; in case you haven’t noticed, I’m a fan of Gothic architecture. Walk through Kensington for Edwardian mansions or Southbank for sleek modernist styles redeveloped from old warehouses. 

London also loves futuristic skyscrapers, too. The Gherkin, the Walkie-Talkie, and The Shard stand tall in the skyline, and there are even some beautiful half-timbered Tudor buildings still standing, Staple Inn on High Holborn being a good example. 

All you need to do is wander the city, and you’ll see how its mix of buildings reflects its past and forward-thinking spirit. Plus, the architecture is all free!

12. Stunning Parklands and Gardens

Fun fact >> Did you know that London is one of the greenest cities in the world? Nearly 47% of its land is dedicated to green spaces! This is just another lovely reason why you should visit London.

The best of the bunch are the Royal Parks, and Regents Park (including Primrose Hill) is my favourite, alongside Hyde Park. It’s where I spent most of my time when I needed to get out and take a stroll amongst nature. But there are tons more places to visit.

Within central London, Green Park, Kensington Gardens and St James’ Park are the next best. Then you have places like Holland Park with its Kyoto Garden and the Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew, which is one of only four UNESCO Heritage Sites and not to be missed.

A bit further north is Hampstead Heath, which offers a rugged charm and some of the best views over the city, as well as Battersea Park just south of the river. This area has been completely redeveloped now and features an exciting new shopping and leisure destination at the iconic Grade II* listed site.

You won’t have to venture too far to find a little garden to relax in, as each neighbourhood has its own secret gardens. Most are open to the public; however, there are a few that are private. But they’ll be locked, so you won’t be able to get in. 

13. Countless Festivals and Events

No matter when you visit, the city always has something exciting happening. Another reason why you should visit London is its incredible line-up of festivals and events, which cover everything from food and fashion to music and theatre.

I’ve been to quite a few festivals in London. A few that stood out were British Summer Time in Hyde Park, where music was blaring, lots of people were dancing, and that perfect golden hour light made the park feel almost magical.

I’ve been to the Notting Hill Carnival plenty of times, too, completely swept up in the colourful costumes and sheer joy of it all. If you’ve never been, it’s an experience you’ll never forget!

The winter months are just as special. Walking through the twinkling Christmas lights on Regent Street or sipping mulled wine in one of the Bavarian tents and listening to live music at Winter Wonderland is one of those moments where London feels like a dream. 

Whatever season you visit, London’s calendar is packed. From the Chelsea Flower Show in spring to the London Film Festival in autumn, there’s always something worth planning your trip around.

14. Incredible Shopping

London is a shopper’s paradise, whether you’re hunting for high-end fashion or visiting flea markets. Its shopping scene is genuinely one of the best reasons to visit, and people come from all over the world just to experience this.

Oxford Street is the obvious starting point, but if you prefer something less hectic, head to Regent Street for classic brands or Carnaby and Marylebone High Street for charming boutique shops. There are also shopping malls, and Westfield in Stratford is one of the most popular options.

For luxury, Harrods, Selfridges, and Liberty are iconic. I could spend hours wandering Liberty’s timber-framed halls or exploring Harrods’ impressive food hall. If vintage is more your thing, Brick Lane and Camden Market are fantastic. I’ve found some incredible one-of-a-kind pieces there over the years. Portobello Market is also brilliant.

If you’re visiting during the holidays, London’s Christmas shopping is magical. Think fairy lights strung across the streets and festive window displays. And the best thing is no matter your budget, there’s a place in London where you can find something you’ll love; this is why you should visit London!

15. Unbeatable Food Markets

Why should you visit London? Well, if you’re a foodie, it’s got some of the best food markets I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere and variety are unbeatable!

Borough Market is a must-visit, and for good reason. It’s a food lover’s paradise with stalls offering everything from artisan cheese to freshly baked pastries. I’ve spent many afternoons here tasting my way around—it’s always buzzing, and the smells are incredible. 

If you want something a bit quieter, Maltby Street Market is lovely. It’s smaller but has amazing craft food stalls and a more relaxed vibe.

For street food, Camden Market has to be on your list. It’s packed with unique options; try the Korean-Mexican tacos; they are incredible! Boxpark and Mercato Metropolitano offer a brilliant selection.

If you’re in the mood for a mix of food and quirky crafts, Greenwich Market and Portobello Road Market are also fab.

16. World-class Dining Experiences

I think it’s fair to say that Britain isn’t exactly famous for its cuisine. But London? That’s a different story. Thanks to being a culture hub, the city has taken on influences from every country, creating one of the most diverse food scenes you’ll find anywhere.

London is home to some of the best Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. If you’re splashing out, head to Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, or Dinner by Heston Blumenthal for an unforgettable dining experience. They’re pricey but worth it for a special treat!

For something a bit more relaxed, Soho and Covent Garden are buzzing with trendy restaurants. Dishoom is my favourite for its incredible Indian-inspired dishes, and Flat Iron is perfect if you’re craving a good steak without breaking the bank.

London’s food scene is one of the best reasons to visit the city. You’ll never run out of new places to try…the food really does come up trumps as to why you should visit London!

17. Breathtaking Cityscape Views

London’s skyline is such a stunning mix of the old and the new, and there are so many ways to soak it all in. Every time I see it, it feels like I’m falling in love with the city all over again.

The Shard is an obvious choice—it’s Western Europe’s tallest building, and those panoramic views are just unreal. You can see for miles! If you’d rather not splash out, the Sky Garden is a brilliant (and free!) alternative. 

For something with a bit more history, climbing St. Paul’s Cathedral is worth every step. The view from the dome is just breathtaking. The Monument is another gem if you don’t mind a workout before reaching the gorgeous views of the city.

If you prefer your views while sipping on a cocktail, there are plenty of rooftop bars in London. A couple of recommendations are Radio Rooftop or Aqua Spirit; both are fantastic spots to relax while taking in the cityscape. And, of course, there’s the iconic London Eye that will give you 360-degree views. 

18. 24 Hour Entertainment

If you’re a social butterfly who can’t sit still, the all-day and night entertainment is another reason why you should visit London! It’s a city that never sleeps…although Mondays are probably the worst nights for evening entertainment. That said, the rest of the week is packed with energy and excitement.

When you’re in London—because I’m hoping you’re already planning your trip—there’s no shortage of things to do. One of my favourite things is to catch a live performance, whether it’s the street buskers in Covent Garden or along Southbank. 

As the evening sets in, the West End theatres really come alive. If you have the time, make sure to squeeze in a show—it’s one of those quintessential London experiences you won’t forget. If music and comedy are more your thing, the O2, Roundhouse, and the Apollo are the places to be for world-class acts.

For nightlife, Soho, Shoreditch, and Camden have fun bars, clubs, and live music venues. There are also loads of unique experiences like immersive theatre, themed speakeasies, and even late-night museum openings to keep you busy.

No matter your travel style, London has a place for you to stay that will remain in your memories forever, and this is another reason why you should visit London.

Iconic luxury hotels like The Ritz, The Savoy, and Claridge’s are perfect for indulging in the ultimate comfort and service. Boutique hotels such as Broadwick Soho or Ham Yard Hotel bring unique charm with stunning design and personal touches. 

There are also loads of quirky options like floating houseboats, and Airbnb stays in historic mews houses, which let you experience something different. If you’re travelling to London on a budget, London’s hostels and budget hotels still offer style and comfort.

20. Fantastic transport network

London’s transport system is a traveller’s dream—efficient, easy to use, and iconic. The Tube (or London Underground) is a quick and convenient way to get almost anywhere, and its map is surprisingly easy to follow once you get the hang of it. 

All trains either go north, south, east or west and if you know where you are in relation to your next destination, it’s easy to figure out where you need to go.

The buses, especially the famous red double-deckers, are a fun way to sightsee while you travel. The black cabs are somewhat of a novelty, too, even if they are a bit pricey; we also have countless Ubers to get you around.

For a more scenic route, jump on a Thames Clipper boat to glide along the river or rent a Santander Cycle to explore bike-friendly paths. The open-top hop-on-hop-off buses are also a great way to explore the sites and get around the city.
