If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know how much I love the Cotswolds. I’m always going on about how stunning it is, and for good reason. It’s easily one of my favourite countryside destinations in Britain!
The Broadway Tower is a prime example of what makes the Cotswolds so special. Picture a charming, beautifully crafted stone tower standing proudly in the middle of nowhere. My first impression was that of a grand chess piece surrounded by rolling hills, peaceful countryside, and plenty of the area’s most notable residents, the sheep!
If you’re looking for a unique experience in the Cotswolds, visiting the Broadway Tower is a must. There are several trails in the area, but the Broadway Tower Circular Walk is the most popular. That said, I’ve also included two alternative trails you might want to explore – perfect for uncovering even more of this lovely region.
The Broadway Tower Circular Walk Overview
The iconic Broadway Tower sits atop the Cotswolds escarpment and is a must-see highlight of the Broadway Tower Circular Walk. Built in the late 18th century by renowned landscape designer Lancelot “Capability” Brown and architect James Wyatt, it was commissioned by George William, the 6th Earl of Coventry.
Although this striking faux-mediaeval tower serves no specific purpose, it strategically sits on Beacon Hill, some 312 metres above sea level, along a pre-medieval trading route. The walks and views around Broadway Tower are sensational, and since Beacon Hill is the second-highest point in the Cotswolds AONB, the views are breathtaking.
The grandeur and charm of the tower feel almost like something out of a fairy tale—think Rapunzel’s tower but with its own love story.
Once you’ve completed the Broadway Tower walk, I recommend entering the tower itself. From the top, you’re treated to spectacular panoramic views of the Severn Valley, and on a clear day, you can even glimpse the Black Mountains in Wales.
The landscape is truly mesmerising, and it is an absolute pleasure to walk around. It offers some of the finest views over the English countryside!

What is Broadway Tower?
Over the years, Broadway Tower has played many roles. It’s been a library of sorts, a printing house (earning the nickname “the lighthouse of wisdom”), a country retreat, a farmhouse, and even a Royal Observer Corps outpost during the war. Today, the estate even features a deer park!
In 1976, it was opened to the public, and in 1980 it was purchased by the Will family. I mentioned a love story earlier; it was Hans-Eugen Will, an entrepreneur, who bought the tower as a romantic gesture for his wife, Renate, who fell in love with it during a visit.
The Broadway Tower Circular Walk is the perfect way to experience this iconic landmark and its surrounding beauty. Whether you’re drawn by the stunning views, the history, or the romance, this walk offers an unforgettable journey into the heart of the Cotswolds.
Where is the Broadway Tower?
The Broadway Tower is located at WR12 7LB. It’s near the village of Broadway, Worcestershire, England. It stands atop Beacon Hill, part of the Cotswold Escarpment, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The tower is accessible via the A44 road, which runs through the Cotswolds. If you’re driving from central London, it’s going to take you around 2.5 hours to travel.
The best time to visit
Summer is always a great time to visit the Cotswolds. The warmer weather and long days make it ideal for exploring, with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 23°C (62°F – 73°F). That said, summer does tend to draw bigger crowds, so it can feel a little busier on the trails.
Autumn is truly magical, with the hills bursting into stunning autumnal colours. The crisp air and quieter paths make it one of the most peaceful times to visit. This is my favourite time of year, and if you love those golden hues, too, this is the season for you.
Winter has its own charm, especially on clear, frosty mornings. The bright blue skies and landscapes are absolutely gorgeous. Just make sure to wrap up warm and wear sturdy boots—it can get muddy if it’s been raining.
Spring is another lovely time to visit. Everything starts to come back to life, with fresh greenery and colourful wildflowers making the countryside feel bright and cheerful. It’s also quieter compared to the summer months, which makes it a great time for a relaxed walk.

The Broadway Tower Circular Walk: 3 Options
The first two routes below are the official Broadway Tower Country Park walks, while the third is the well-loved walk from Broadway Village to Broadway Tower. Each offers a unique experience with varying difficulty levels, so you can choose the trail that suits you best and enjoy the Broadway Tower estate to the fullest.

Broadway Tower Circular Walk (1.2km/0.7mile)
If it’s your first visit to the Broadway Tower Country Park, I recommend parking at the Broadway Tower Car Park, located right opposite the Morris and Brown Café. This is where you can grab tickets for the tower and other activities around the estate before starting your walk.
The Morris and Brown Café is the perfect starting point for this easy 1.2km circular trail. From here, the path heads down a road toward the Tower Barn Café, passing the southern edge of the Deer Park and weaving through some trees. It’s all signposted.
Once you reach the Tower Barn Café, take a sharp right turn along the edge of the field and follow the tree line. At the end of the field, you’ll join the Cotswolds Way, where you turn right again. This section involves a gentle uphill climb, with Broadway Tower gradually coming into view at the top of the hill.
This walk is relatively easy and perfect for families, though it isn’t suitable for prams. Along the way, you’ll spot sheep grazing in the fields and a charming stone wall along the Cotswolds Way. You’ll only be on this portion of the path briefly before arriving at Broadway Tower.
The entire route takes roughly 20 minutes.
Broadway Tower Circular Walk (2.2km/1.4mile)
The 2.2km circular walk around the estate is slightly longer and more scenic. It offers stunning views over Broadway Village and the surrounding countryside. The panoramic views from the escarpment make it my favourite of the two official trails.
This trail starts the same as the 1.2km walk above, but once you reach the Tower Barn Café, instead of turning right, continue downhill past three fields. As you reach the edge of the ridge, the trees fall away, revealing breathtaking views of the village below. Follow the trail to David Jelfs Bench, a lovely spot to rest and soak up the scenery.
From here, the trail continues along the Cotswolds Way, with a slightly steeper incline. Don’t worry—the company of sheep and the gorgeous landscape make it enjoyable. Eventually, you’ll reach a kissing gate marking the boundary of the Deer Park.
The final stretch of the walk takes you along the Deer Park, where I’m sure you’re going to spot some of the resident red deer grazing nearby. The views from the top of the tower are the highlight of the walk, so be sure to leave time to climb it. This route takes about 40 minutes to complete, depending on how much time you spend enjoying the views at David Jelfs Bench.

Broadway Village to Broadway Tower (6.5km/4 miles)
The Broadway Village to Broadway Tower walk is part of the famous 102-mile Cotswolds Way, which stretches from Chipping Campden to Bath. This route is one of the most popular ways to reach Broadway Tower, but it’s also the longest of the three.
There are a few variations of this trail, but most start either in Broadway Village or at Broadway Tower. The walk forms a circular loop and takes you along the Cotswolds Way, around Broadway Tower Country Park, through the fields to Bury End, and back to the village.
This route has some steep sections, but the views make it well worth the effort. Along the way, you’ll pass through the beautiful village of Broadway, home to a charming High Street and a war memorial at its base.
If you want to do this walk, I recommend checking out the National Trails website. They have an excellent, detailed guide. Although I still need to do this circular walk, it looks like a fantastic way to explore the historic village and the iconic tower while immersing yourself in the stunning Cotswolds landscape.
Exploring The Broadway Tower
Even though the walks around Broadway Tower are an absolute must, they will inevitably lead you to the tower itself, which I highly recommend exploring. I decided to enter the tower museum and purchased a ticket at the door as I hadn’t bought the ticket before I started. Let me just say, I loved the rooftop viewing platform; it made the whole experience sensational!
That said, I thought the interior of the tower was also a real highlight. Inside, you’re going to find elegant Georgian decor, beautifully maintained. As you pass through the tower, each room offers a glimpse into the tower’s history and charm.
The dining room, in particular, stood out.
I could just imagine what it would be like hosting a grand dinner party in there. With its cosy atmosphere and sweeping views over the Cotswolds hills, I know my friends and I would absolutely love it.
The tower consists of four levels, and you’ll make your way up via a narrow spiral staircase on one side before descending on the opposite side. The space is compact but adds to the character of the experience. If you’re claustrophobic, this might be a challenge.
It took me about 20 minutes to explore the tower at a leisurely pace, though you could spend longer if you take your time listening to the audio guide in full.
The rooftop viewing platform
Once you reach the rooftop viewing platform, you’re in for a real treat. From here, you’ll get panoramic views stretching over 60 miles, making it the highest viewpoint in the Cotswolds.
Fun fact >> On a clear day, it’s even possible to spot some famous landmarks such as Gloucester Cathedral!
I also recommend getting the audio guide as well, which is included with the ticket. I found it to be informative and easy to follow. The current proprietor shares stories about the tower’s history, which adds a lovely personal touch to the visit.
Whether you’re here for the walks, the history, or just the views, Broadway Tower is a place that stays with you long after you’ve left. It’s a truly magical part of the Cotswolds that’s well worth a visit.
Things To Do Around Broadway Tower
In addition to the stunning trails, Broadway Tower Country Park offers plenty of other attractions and activities to make the most of your visit.
Broadway Tower Nuclear Bunker
If you’re interested in history, you might want to consider visiting the Nuclear Bunker. Although I didn’t get the chance to visit it myself, it does sound like a fascinating attraction, especially if you enjoy war history. Inside, you’ll get a glimpse into what it was like during Cold War Britain.
Fun fact >> The bunker is 15 feet underground and was once manned by the Royal Observer Corps during the Cold War to monitor nuclear activity.
The Deer Park
The Deer Park is located within the grounds of Broadway Tower and is another must-see. Although all three of these circular walks around Broadway Tower pass by the park, it is possible to book a deer encounter, where you can go inside the enclosure, which would be just magical.
Established in 1980 by Hans-Eugen Will, the park is home to over twenty majestic red deer. The herd is led by a magnificent stag named Lancelot, who is honestly the star of the park.
Pro tip >> If you’re visiting in June or July, keep an eye out for the adorable calves—they’re born during these months and would be a treat to see!
Broadway Tower Café & Afternoon Tea
A trip to the Cotswolds wouldn’t be complete without indulging in one of Britain’s most beloved traditions: afternoon tea. You’ll be able to enjoy tea at the Tower Barn. Last I checked, it was only £25pp. You’ll be treated to an array of classic goodies, of course, but with a picturesque landscape to accompany you. I popped my head into the cafe when I passed, and its cosy atmosphere and views would make it a fantastic way to unwind after your walk.
Workshops & Activities
The Tower Barn also hosts a variety of creative workshops and unique experiences. From watercolour painting classes to foraging courses, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re heading to Broadway Tower, here’s everything you need to know to plan your day perfectly:
Where to park when you arrive
The Broadway Tower Car Park is located off Buckle Street (check it out on Google Maps). It’s pretty small, and during my visit, an inconsiderate parker caused a bit of a jam, so please park sensibly.
I would advise against parking along the roadside. The roads are narrow, making them tricky for passing vehicles to navigate.
- Cost:
- £3/€3.50/$3.70 for 4 hours
- £6/€7/$7.50 for the whole day
- Opening hours: 8 am – 5 pm (gates lock at 5:15 pm)
- Parking tickets are available at the Morris and Brown Café, where you can also grab refreshments.
Insider Tip: If you’re up for a short walk, park at the Fish Hill Picnic Area instead; it’s FREE. It’s a 15-minute stroll to the tower, and there is space for about 20 cars.
Broadway Tower opening times and entrance fees
This can get a little confusing, so here’s a breakdown:
- Footpaths only: Free access. If you stick strictly to public footpaths, no ticket is required.
- General grounds admission: £4 (I highly recommend purchasing an admission ticket, as it helps with upkeep and allows you to enjoy the grounds more freely).
You can pay for parking and admission at the Morris and Brown Café or online ahead of time.

Top tip >> If you’re unsure about entering the tower, you can purchase the Tower Museum Ticket at the kiosk inside the tower itself after deciding. I opted to explore the tower, which was a great experience. Those views from the top are absolutely breathtaking—don’t miss them if you can!
Onsite Facilities
As mentioned, you have the Morris and Brown Cafe, which also has a small shop. There’s an outdoor seating area as well, and you’ll be able to glimpse the tower while enjoying light snacks.
If you follow the path through the woods and past Deer Park, you’ll come across the Tower Barn shop and cafe.

How Long Will You Need At Broadway Tower?
It really depends on how you plan to spend your visit. I spent around three hours in the morning exploring the park, soaking in the stunning scenery, and enjoying both the inside and outside of Broadway Tower. This still left plenty of time to visit my next destination, Stow-on-the-Wold, in the afternoon.
If you’re up for more adventure, the best route is the circular walk between Broadway Tower and Broadway Village. This hike takes about five hours to complete, and if you start early, you can still explore more of the Cotswolds in the afternoon.
Are Dogs Welcome?
Yes, dogs are welcome on the park grounds, so you can absolutely bring your dog along. However, they’re not allowed inside the tower itself, and you’ll need to keep them on a lead at all times.
Both the Morris and Brown Café and the Espresso Bar Restaurant at Tower Barn have dog-friendly seating, so you can relax with your pup after a walk.
What Should You Wear?
Partaking in the Broadway Tower circular walk means exploring not just the tower but also its 200 acres of stunning countryside. Dressing appropriately is key to enjoying your day.
England’s weather can be unpredictable—even in summer—so keep that in mind when planning your outfit.
Here’s what I recommend:
- Footwear: Closed, flat shoes are a must. Walking boots are excellent, but trainers work fine, too, if the grounds dry. If it’s rained recently, wellies are essential for muddy paths.
- Clothing: Dress in layers and always pack a lightweight rain jacket, as showers can pop up unexpectedly.

- Sunscreen | Protect your skin, even on overcast days.
- Water Bottle | Staying hydrated is key; I always bring my favourite reusable bottle.
- Hiking Boots & Poles | Comfortable boots are going to make a huge difference.

My visit to Broadway Tower was absolutely fantastic. I was lucky to have beautiful weather, even in early spring (I went most recently for my birthday), which made the Broadway Tower circular walk even more enjoyable. It was indeed the perfect addition to my Cotswolds itinerary.
To make the day extra special, I combined my visit with a trip to Stow-on-the-Wold, another gem in the Cotswolds.
