Lincoln is surrounded by fantastic nature parks, with even more spread across Lincolnshire. While the Lincolnshire Wolds is a stunning hidden gem—often overshadowed by the Cotswolds—there are plenty of beautiful spots to enjoy right on Lincoln’s doorstep.

If you’re visiting Lincoln and want to explore its green spaces, here are five country parks you shouldn’t miss: Whisby Nature Park, Hartsholme Country Park, Boultham Park, Greetwell Hollow Nature Reserve, and the Lincoln Arboretum.

The Best Country Parks In Lincoln, UK

1. Whisby Nature Park

Whisby Nature Park is the one I visit most often. Usually, we take my friend’s adorable King Charles Spaniel for a walk along the main circular route—sometimes with the kids in tow! It’s the perfect nature park to unwind in.

Whisby Nature Park was once a quarry and has been transformed by nature into a buzzing habitat. Today, it’s home to a stunning landscape filled with wildlife, nature trails, and a number of huge lakes, which have created an idyllic escape.

At Whisby’s Natural World Centre, you’ll find a free car park and the starting point for many of the walking routes, which range from 1 to 3 miles.

Whisby is about six miles from Lincoln High Street—around a two-hour hike from the city centre. However, the 48 and 49 buses pass nearby, making it accessible by public transport.

2. Hartsholme Country Park

Another one of my favourite country parks in Lincoln is Hartsholme. It features Victorian landscaped gardens, a large reservoir, woodlands, and grasslands. Many original features remain, and it’s a Green Flag Award-winning park.

The visitor centre hosts exhibitions and interactive features about Hartsholme’s history and wildlife. There’s also a children’s play area and a café. Although I haven’t camped here myself, I know there’s a well-maintained tour park and campsite.

In summer, the park is at its best—brimming with pink and purple flowers that line the trails along the reservoir. It’s the perfect place for a picnic, and I love relaxing here while enjoying ice cream in the sun.

Hartsholme is less than three miles from Lincoln High Street. You can walk there in under an hour or take the number 19 or number 6 bus from Lincoln Central Bus Station (Google Maps), which takes about 20 minutes. It’s one of the best country parks near Lincoln centre.

3. Boultham Park

I have a funny story to share. The last time we visited Boultham Park, we ended up in the lake—literally!

From start to finish, it was a hilarious visit.

First, the dog decided to jump into the lake—straight into a patch of algae. He got stuck, and we had to coax him back to the bank before finally pulling him out with a branch. Then, we took turns on the zipline, racing each other up and down.

But the funniest part was when we all started pushing each other into the lake. I managed to escape, but the others weren’t so lucky—including my friend’s six-year-old daughter, who, unfortunately, got dragged in by one of the adults. Completely unintentional, of course—she just happened to be sitting next to him when he got shoved!

Aside from being the scene of some hilarious memories, Boultham Park is a fantastic outdoor place to visit. It won the prestigious Green Flag Award in 2023 and offers open green spaces, woodland, and a picturesque lake.

Located just under two miles from Lincoln city centre, it’s a 40-minute walk, or you can hop on one of the many buses passing by, which take about 20 minutes.

4. Greetwell Hollow Nature Reserve

Greetwell Hollow Nature Reserve is a peaceful hidden gem. It used to be a limestone quarry, much like Whisby, but it’s now a serene wildlife haven with dramatic cliffs. It’s certainly the less-frequented country park on my list.

The nature trails wind through wooded areas and open meadows, which I love, creating a wonderful wilderness place to visit. It’s especially great for spotting wildflowers and butterflies in the summer!

The site’s also home to some fascinating geological features, with unique rock formations that have been around for millions of years.

The trails here feel much more untouched than some of Lincoln’s busier parks, making it the perfect spot for a quiet walk. Whether you’re with the kids, birdwatching, or just enjoying the calm, Greetwell Hollow is a refreshing break from the city’s more polished green spaces.

It’s about 2.5 miles from Lincoln city centre, accessible by foot or bike. There isn’t much public transport, so driving is the easiest option.

5. The Lincoln Arboretum

The Maze at Lincoln Arboretum is a fantastic city park. — *The Maze at the Lincoln Arboretum.*

Another one of my favourite country parks in Lincoln is the 150-year-old Arboretum. Located in the heart of Lincoln, this park is a fantastic place to enjoy open spaces without venturing too far from the city.

Unlike the others, it’s not very big, but it makes up for that with beautiful walking paths, water fountains, a duck pond, a bandstand, and a giant lion statue proudly standing at the top of the hill.

The views over Lincoln are superb, and if you visit during golden hour, you’ll get some fantastic shots. Autumn is my favourite time to visit this park, as the trees have turned to beautiful burnt shades, and the sun setting over the skyline is magical.

The vision of Edward Milner, a revered Victorian gardener, Lincoln Arboretum was restored to its former beauty in 2003. Today, the park is of grade II historic importance and has achieved a green flag status.

There’s free roadside parking along Lindum Terrace at the north entrance of the Arboretum, which is about a ten-minute walk to Lincoln Cathedral. Otherwise, a pay-and-display car park is available on Sewell Road at the weekends.

These are what I consider the 5 best country parks in Lincoln; however, I have my favourite among them. The Arboretum is an absolute gem and so close to the Lincoln Cathedral that if you enjoy nature while visiting cities, then I highly recommend a visit to this park.

Outside of the centre, Hartsholme is a fantastic choice. It’s large enough to explore different habitats and has been well-maintained with original features. It’s also close enough to the city that adding a visit to any Lincoln itinerary is completely possible.
