It’s no secret that London is my favourite city. Luckily, the city centre is only a quick 40-minute train ride from where I live now, but I lived in London for 6 years, and every time I visit, I still feel nostalgic. I’d love to move back there in the future, if only for a short period.
There are many reasons I love this city. It offers a thrilling mix of nonstop energy, world-class entertainment, and over 2,000 years of history, architecture, and culture.

1. The Tower of London
It’s a 1,000-year-old castle located in the heart of the city and remains one of the most visited attractions in London. It was built by William I (also known as William the Conqueror) after his 1066 victory as a fortress to protect the city. The iconic site is nestled on the River Thames and has been a royal palace, a prison and a treasury.
Today, the Tower is best known for housing the Crown Jewels, a beautiful collection of crowns, sceptres, and ceremonial regalia that are still used by the royal family.
I remember my first visit to the Tower as a child. It was one of those special days when I got to experience the formidable fortress inside. I explored the grounds, the armoury, and the Crown Jewels, which are beautifully imprinted in my memory; however, I’m definitely due for another visit!
A guided tour from the Yeoman Warders, better known as the Beefeaters, is a highlight of any visit. During the tour, they share fascinating stories and bring the Tower’s history to life. The ravens, who are known as the guardians, are also worth some attention.

2. Tower Bridge
Tower Bridge is one of London’s most recognisable landmarks and my favourite bridge in the city. It’s simply stunning.
Built between 1886 and 1894 to connect both sides of the River Thames, it’s a gorgeous Neo-Gothic design. This Victorian-era gem is not only beautiful to look at but also offers a fun and immersive experience with its glass floor walkway.
Inside, you can explore the Tower Bridge Exhibition, which showcases the history of the bridge and how its iconic drawbridges are raised. However, walking along the bridge is completely free.
Top tip >> After your visit, there are a few unique things to do in London nearby. Check out St. Katharine Docks, which has a peaceful marina vibe and is still somewhat of a hidden gem, Maltby Street Market is incredible for street food, and the Bridge Theatre offers great shows.

3. St Paul’s Cathedral
It’s been a while since I was last here, but it’s one of the top 10 must see attractions in London that will leave you in awe.
St Paul’s Cathedral is another one of London’s iconic landmarks and an architectural gem for first-time visitors. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London in 1666, it’s a stunning masterpiece of Baroque architecture.
Upon entering, you’re entry ticket will allow you to explore the breathtaking Whispering Gallery. If you’re feeling up to it, there’s also the option to climb to the top of the dome. It’s worth the 528 steps to the top of the Golden Gallery for panoramic views of London. The interior is just as lovely, with its ornate mosaics and soaring ceilings.
Top tip >> For a quiet moment, visit the nearby Postman’s Park, or walk across the Millennium Bridge to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre or explore the Tate Modern, a contemporary art gallery.

4. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Gardens
I am so due for another visit to Kew Gardens! It’s been a good few years since I was last there, but I remember it was during Christmas, and the light show was spectacular. If you’re in London during the festive season, Kew is a must, I also think it’s one of the best places to visit in London for couples!
The garden is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most gorgeous places to visit in London. It’s home to over 50,000 plants and is ideal for a peaceful day out amongst nature.
Highlights include the Temperate House, the largest Victorian glasshouse in the world, and the Treetop Walkway, offering a unique perspective from above the trees.
Alternatively, the Sky Garden (free to enter) is another fantastic option if you want to enjoy lush greenery and spectacular views of London while staying in the heart of the city.
Top tip >> If you’re visiting Kew pre-book here and plan a full morning or afternoon. Nearby, you’ll find the Kew Village Market (on the first Sunday of the month) or take a stroll along the picturesque Thames Path.

5. ZSL London Zoo
ZSL London Zoo is the world’s oldest scientific zoo and one of the best London attractions for families or for dates, which is what I did there the last time I visited!
It’s a really lovely zoo located inside Regents Park and home to over 14,000 animals, including big cats, penguins, and gorillas, as well as interactive exhibits like the Land of the Lions and Butterfly Paradise.
Not far away, you’ll find Madame Tussauds, another fantastic attraction where you can snap photos with incredible lifelike wax figures of celebrities, royals, and historical icons.
Top tip >> By booking your tickets online for London Zoo, you’ll save money and avoid long queues. You’ll need at least half a day to explore, and don’t forget to check the feeding times!

6. Parliament Square Garden
As an iconic landmark, Parliament Square is another one of the top 10 must see attractions in London for its breathtaking architecture. This is where you’re going to find the Gothic-style Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and the Houses of Parliament (aka Westminster Palace). This area is rich in history and home to one of only four UNESCO World Heritage Sites located in London.
The square is usually bustling with tourists, but the stunning views make it worth braving the crowds. Cross Westminster Bridge for views of the River Thames—it’s one of the best photo spots in London!
There are plenty of tours available, from guided walking tours like this one to private experiences. You can even explore inside Westminster Palace on select days.
If you enjoy history, just around the corner is the Churchill War Rooms. This is another popular attraction, offering a look into the secret underground headquarters used during World War II. You can join a tour here or explore at your own pace with the in-depth audio guide.

7. Buckingham Palace
I don’t think any trip to London is complete without a visit to Buckingham Palace. It’s the official London residence of the King, and while it’s not my personal favourite palace in the UK in regard to aesthetics, it’s steeped in history and has been the centre of royal life since the 1800s.
If you’re visiting during the summer months, the palace is open for tours of the State Rooms and the Palace Gardens. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in London during this time.
One of the top free activities here is watching the Changing of the Guard. It’s a world-famous ceremony. Another royal event to look out for is Trooping the Colour; it’s held annually to celebrate the monarch’s official birthday.
These activities are held along the Mall, which is famous for its royal wedding parades and stretches from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square. Here you’ll find the National Gallery (free to enter) and Nelson’s Column.
For a more historic palace experience, head to Hampton Court Palace. Once home to Henry VIII, it’s a short trip from central London and features stunning Tudor architecture, magnificent gardens, and even a famous hedge maze!
Top tip >> Arrive early for the Changing of the Guard, which typically starts at 10 am or book a guided tour to learn more about the palace’s history. If you’re visiting Hampton Court, give yourself at least half a day to explore its grounds and exhibitions.

8. Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum is one of my favourite buildings in London—it’s absolutely gorgeous and easily one of top 10 must see attractions in London! From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a massive skeleton of a blue whale in the grand entrance hall.
The exhibitions change regularly, but I’d say the geological gallery and the dinosaur displays are among my favourites. In winter, the museum grounds host an ice rink which is really fun and adds a festive touch.
Nearby is the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Each one offers something unique, from interactive science exhibits to stunning art and design collections. Hyde Park isn’t to far and deserves a stroll to Kensington Palace.
If you’re interested in museums, the Museum Mile is a famous stretch of must-see museums in London, including the British Museum and Charles Dickens Museum between Temple and Euston tube stations.
Top tip >> If you’re looking for the best places to visit in London for free, The Natural History Museum is top of my list. However, pre-booking your timed entry slot is a good idea, especially during busy periods. If you’re visiting nearby museums, allow at least 1-2 hours for each.

9. The View from The Shard
One of those once-in-a-lifetime things to do in London is catch the elevator to the top of the Shard and witness spectacular views over the capital from the tallest building in Britain. At 310 metres tall, it’s an unforgettable way to see the city’s landmarks and is now an iconic part of London’s skyline.
While I’ve yet to experience the viewing platform for myself, I’ve dined in restaurants that offer panoramic views, and I can confirm the views are absolutely stunning!
The tickets for the viewing platform sell out fast, especially during peak season, so it’s best to book online and in advance to save money and secure your time slot. If you want a different experience, I recommend dining at one of the Shard’s restaurants, like Aqua or Hutong.
While you’re in the area, check out nearby attractions like the colourful Graffiti Tunnel or the famous Sea Life Aquarium. Borough Market is one of London’s most famous food markets and a must-visit for delicious street food.

10. West End Theatre
No trip to London is complete without catching a show in the West End, the city’s theatre heart and my final top 10 must do in London.
The West End is world-famous and known for its mind-blowing shows. You’ll find everything from classic musicals like The Lion King and Les Misérables to brand-new plays.
Home to historic theatres like the Royal Opera House and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, as well as newer venues showcasing cutting-edge performances it’s the place to be come evening!
It goes without saying the tickets can be pricey, so if you’re on a budget, check out TKTS in Leicester Square for discounted tickets on the day of the show. However, I suggest pre-booking your tickets to avoid disappointment.
Top tip >> Don’t forget to explore the surrounding Covent Garden area, which is full of restaurants, bars, and street performers, or head to Soho for a lively night out after the show.
