1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary Overview

This itinerary takes you to five of the most picturesque villages, with a stop at Dover’s Hill for a breathtaking viewpoint. Each village has its charm, filled with traditional honey-coloured cottages, charming country pubs, and winding lanes perfect for exploring.

Before we begin, I wanted to share a summary of the itinerary:

  • Your day in the Cotswolds: Bibury (1 hr) → Burton-on-the-Water (1.5 hrs) → Lower Slaughter (45 mins) → Chipping Campden (1.5 hrs)  → Dover’s Hill (30 mins) → Stow-in-the-Wold (1 hr)

I’ve designed this 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary to be realistic and enjoyable. You’ll see the best places to go in the Cotswolds without feeling rushed, and I’ve thrown in a couple of hidden gems to make your trip extra special. It focuses more around the North Cotswolds.

Most villages only need an hour or so to explore, but you’ll want to take your time soaking it all in. To get around, you’ll need a car—or you can rent one straight from the airport if you’re flying in.

It’s quite hard to get around the Cotswolds on public transport, although it is doable if you have time, which is not ideal for this one day Cotswolds itinerary. You could always opt for a Cotswolds day trip.

The Cotswolds in a day: Why I love the Cotswolds

The scenery is absolutely unreal. Think soft hills rolling into each other, gorgeous walking trails, and golden stone walls, cottages, and bridges that glow in the sunlight. You’ll pass colossal oak trees, fields stretching for miles, and cosy villages.

The villages themselves are a dream, lined with independent shops, fancy delicatessens, and lively market stalls (if you time it right for market day!).

And of course, one of my favourite things about the Cotswolds is visiting all the cosy pubs for a pint or indulging in afternoon tea, because you’ve got to embrace the British countryside experience fully, right?  These experiences aren’t just about the food and drink, but also about the warm hospitality and the chance to mingle with the locals.

Is one day in the Cotswolds long enough?

The Cotswolds is pretty big! It covers around 787 square miles (2,038 km²) across six counties in England: Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire, Worcestershire, and Somerset.

It stretches about 90 miles (145 km) from north to south and 25 miles (40 km) across at its widest point. That means while it’s totally possible to explore some of the best villages in a day, you’d need several days (or even weeks!) to see everything.

For a 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary, sticking to the destinations I’ve included is the best way to see the sites and maximise your time without spending too much of the day driving.

Car parks are easy to find within the villages and there is also ample roadside parking. Just be sure not to park in permit zones, otherwise you could get a ticket!

When’s the best time to visit the Cotswolds

During the summer, the Cotswolds is one of the most popular countryside retreats for both tourists and locals. Back in 1966, it was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and honestly, it’s one of the most breathtaking places in the UK.

The Cotswolds can get very busy, especially during these summer months, so the best time to go is early autumn. Early autumn in the Cotswolds will ensure you miss the peak summer season crowds but still enjoy the warm weather.

However, if you’re a flower lover, then you might miss some of the beautiful flower displays; there will still be plenty of arrangements to see in early September. With milder weather and spring blooms, May could be the best time to go!

The Perfect 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary

Get ready for a weekend of heritage, nature and hidden gems. For this itinerary, I’ve included the top attractions starting with Bibury. Here are the top attractions and things to do during your one day in the Cotswolds:

Bibury

Cottages to see in Bibury on a 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary
Bibury is a popular addition to a 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary.

Bibury is one of those ‘must-visit’ locations in the Cotswolds and you’ll find it on most day trip itineraries. It makes a great starting point to your visit, but head here first thing to avoid the day trippers and crowds.

The town is renowned for being “the most beautiful village in England” and is home to some of the most picturesque scenery in the region. It boasts a tranquil atmosphere that is perfect for a relaxing morning stroll!

One of the main attractions in Bibury is Arlington Row, which is a row of weavers’ cottages that are quite famous. You’ll want to make an obligatory photo stop here!

The steeply pitched roofs of these cottages add to the charm of the place, and they are located right next to the River Coln, which provides a peaceful backdrop to the stunning scenery.

Pro tip >> Arlington Row is a popular spot for tourists; if you prefer to avoid crowds, stick to my 1 day Cotswolds itinerary and visit in the morning when the crowds are much smaller.

Top Attractions at Bibury

In addition to Arlington Row, Bibury is also home to other attractions that are worth visiting, such as the beautiful St. Mary’s Church and the Bibury Trout Farm, which is the oldest working trout farm in England.

The village is also surrounded by lush green countryside that is perfect for hiking and cycling, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. Check out Rack Isle Water Meadows, which is a wildlife reserve just behind Arlington Row.

Pro tip >> If you plan to visit Bibury, take a slow walk around the village to take in its quaint character and charm, then stop by The Swan Hotel for a delicious coffee.

Bourton-on-the-Water

When you’re planning your 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary, you absolutely must add a stop at Bourton-on-the-Water. This charming village is known as “the Little Venice of the Cotswolds” and is picture-perfect.

It’s a little commercialised since it’s hugely popular but it’s still oozing fairytale vibes. It’s actually a charming spot to grab souvenirs.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll be struck by the beauty of the traditional golden-coloured stone houses and low bridges that span the River Windrush. I recommend taking a stroll along the river bank, where you’ll find a variety of quaint cafes and local shops to explore.

Top Attractions at Bourton-on-the-Water

Visit the Motor Museum on a 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary
The entrance to the Motor Museum has this funky mini out the front!

There are a few things to do at Bourton-on-the-Water. The first thing would be to walk along the banks of the River Windrush and enjoy the views, dipping your toes into the cool water. It’s possible to have a picnic here, too, or stop by one of the restaurants facing the river.

There are a couple of local farmers’ shops on the high street that sell lovely local produce and fresh bread. We enjoyed picnicking on the riverbanks and eating fresh food!

The last time I visited, I was with my brother and nephew, so with a male-dominated crew, I reluctantly agreed to visit the Cotswolds Motoring Museum. It turned out to be a fantastic attraction which featured vintage cars and toy car collections. It’s a lot bigger than it looks and has some interesting exhibitions.

The Model Village is interesting to see. It’s a miniature version of the village. There’s also the Cotswolds Perfumery, where you can blend your fragrance, which has been there for over 50 years, and the Dragonfly Maze, which is a fun maze created by traditional English hedgerow.

If you’re travelling with families, then you might be interested in Birdland. Although I didn’t visit, I’ve heard the park has over 500 bird species and would be an excellent addition to this 1 day Cotswolds itinerary!

Walking Trails in Burton-on-the-Water

Bourton-on-the-Water is a great place for nature trails. The beautiful Cotswold countryside surrounds the village, and several walking paths offer stunning views of the area.

Popular trails include:

  • 1.5-mile (one-way) Straight Route: Burton-on-the-WaterLower Slaughter
  • 5.4-mile Circular Route: Burton-on-the-Water – Lower Slaughter – Upper Slaughter – Burton-on-the-Water

Lower Slaughter

The River Eye in Lower Slaughter and Old Mill.
A visit to the Old Mill on the River Eye is a fantastic addition to your 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary.

This picturesque village is near Bourton-on-the-Water, and despite its name, it’s a lovely place to visit.

Lower Slaughter is known for its idyllic setting, situated along a small stream crossed by two quaint bridges. One of the highlights of the village is Corpse Hill Road, which is considered one of the most romantic streets in Britain.

The road is very pretty and is a great place to take some memorable photos and a short stroll to soak up the village’s romantic atmosphere!

Another notable feature is the Old Mill. The original water wheel is still in place, providing a glimpse into the area’s deep-rooted history. There used to be a gift shop and tea room here; however, it recently closed for business.

Insider tip >> Instead, you’ll find a converted horse trailer at the Old Mill to provide hot and cold beverages, ice cream, packed snacks, and sandwiches until summer 2025. The kiosk is open Friday, Saturday & Sunday, 10 am – 4 pm.

Top Attractions at Lower Slaughter

There’s some beautiful gardens to visit in the Cotswolds.

There isn’t much to see in Lower Slaughter, but a visit to St Mary’s Church is always lovely. The church was built in the 13th Century and features beautiful stained windows and a very tall spire.

Behind the old mill is a short walk along a public footpath that follows the River Eye. It will take you to Upper Slaughter should you decide to add another location to your 1 day Cotswolds itinerary

You can also visit the Lower Slaughter Manor House, which has been around for over 1,000 years!

Chipping Campden

A row cottages in Chipping Campden, Cotswolds.

Chipping Campden is a must-visit on your 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary. This historic market town is known for its gorgeous High Street, lined with honey-coloured stone buildings, independent shops, and traditional pubs.

It has a quieter, more local feel compared to some of the busier villages, making it the perfect place to soak up some Cotswold charm. It’s also a fantastic base if you decide to spend the night.

The town has a rich history tied to the wool trade, which brought prosperity to the area during medieval times. You can still see evidence of this in its grand buildings and historic landmarks. I always love stopping here for a stroll and a bite to eat—it has some of the best tea rooms and bakeries in the region!

Top Attractions at Chipping Campden

Visit St James Church on a 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary.
St James Church is one of the prettiest and grandest in the Cotswolds.

There’s plenty to see and do in Chipping Campden, and it’s a great mix of history, local culture, and beautiful scenery.

The Market Hall is the most famous, the iconic stone structure was once the centre of trade for wool merchants. It’s a stunning piece of history that you can still walk through today.

One of the most beautiful churches in the Cotswolds is located in Chipping Campden, with a towering spire and impressive medieval architecture, St James Church is a must-visit. Grevel House is a beautiful 14th-century wool merchant’s house, showcasing the town’s rich medieval past.

A visit to Hidcote Manor Gardens, just a short drive away, is also worth adding to your 1 day Cotswolds Itinerary. It’s a popular National Trust garden and a dream for nature lovers. I visited in spring when it was filled with magnolias, but in summer there are stunning flower displays!

The Broadway tower is also pretty spectacular. It’s a huge stone tower standing atop an escarpment with fabulous views across the countryside.

Walking Trails in Chipping Campden

If you’re looking for a scenic walk, Chipping Campden is the starting point for the famous Cotswold Way. This long-distance trail runs for 102 miles, stretching all the way to Bath, but you can just do a small section if you’re short on time.

Popular trails include:

  • 1.5-mile Circular Walk: Chipping Campden – Dover’s Hill – Chipping Campden (A short but scenic loop with stunning views)
  • 5-mile Walk (one way) Straight Route: Chipping Campden – Broadway Tower

Dover’s Hill

Visit Dover's Hill on a 1 Day Cotswolds Itinerary.
Dover’s Hill.

If you’re looking for one of the best viewpoints in the Cotswolds, you can’t miss Dover’s Hill. Located just outside Chipping Campden, this elevated spot offers breathtaking panoramic views across the rolling hills and lush countryside.

It’s a peaceful escape and a great place just to stand, take a deep breath, and admire the scenery.

But Dover’s Hill has a unique history as well! The hill is famous for being the birthplace of the Cotswold Olimpicks, an unusual sporting event dating back to 1612. The games, which still take place today, feature quirky events like shin-kicking, tug-of-war, and hammer throwing.

For walkers, Dover’s Hill is part of the Cotswold Way, so it’s an excellent spot for a gentle hike. It’s also an ideal picnic stop, especially on a sunny day.

Stow-on-the-Wold

The final village to add to your 1 day Cotswolds itinerary offers more breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Stow-on-the-Wold is known for its historic architecture, quaint shops, and countless cosy cafes. Lucy’s tearoom is a good bet!

As you wander through the town, you’ll come across a variety of unique boutiques and plenty of antique shops, making it a great place to find unique souvenirs and gifts.

Stow-on-the-Wold is one of my favourite towns in the Cotswolds, with a historic charm, stunning views, and a welcoming atmosphere; it’s the perfect place to end your Cotswolds adventure!

Pro tip >> If you’re a foodie like me, you’ll also appreciate the town’s selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants, which offer everything from traditional cakes to locally sourced, farm-to-table cuisine.

Hotel Ideas In The Cotswolds (in case you fancy staying the night?)

There are so many beautiful places to stay in the Cotswolds that finding the perfect spot can be daunting. But don’t worry! I’ve found some charming accommodations near the attractions within this itinerary to help you choose. I’ve selected a variety to suit all budgets.

Stay in Northleach: Far Peak Campsite (B)

Far-Peak-Campsite.
Far-Peak-Campsite.
Far-Peak-Campsite.

The Cotswold is expensive, and you’ll struggle to find accommodation for under £100 in the countryside. If you have a low budget, Cheltenham or Gloucester offers budget-friendly hotels. Alternatively, camping grounds are an affordable option. I have stayed at Far Peak Campsite, which was great and close to Bourton-on-the-Water. They also offer glamping experiences.

Stay in Burton-on-the-Water: The Lansdowne Guest House (MR)

In one of the best locations, the Lansdowne Guest House is a charming boutique hotel in the heart of Bourton-on-the-Water. You’ll get free WiFi and parking facilities. Guests have said it’s a super clean and comfortable stay in a great location with a superb breakfast!

Stay in Upper Slaughter: Lords of the Manor (HE)

A favourite hotel in the Cotswolds is Lords of the Manor. I mentioned previously their restaurant; however, the 17th-century manor is set in 8 acres of secluded gardens and parkland. It has beautiful rooms, breakfast can be included, and it is very well-reviewed.

Stay in Stow-on-the-Wold: The Old Stocks Inn (L)

One of the top luxury hotels in the Cotswolds is nestled in the heart of Stow-on-the-Wold. The Old Stocks Inn is a 17th-century coaching inn that overlooks Market Square and the original medieval Market Stocks. The location is excellent, the service is outstanding, and breakfast is included.

You’ll get to visit charming villages, soak up stunning countryside views, and enjoy cosy pubs or afternoon tea. It’s also an easy escape from London, making it a great addition to a UK itinerary.
